All those dubloons on the ground can be refined into gold. 3 dubloons is one gold nugget. I think you need to be near a science machine first in order to be able to do it a first time. There is also the pig king equivalent in Shipwrecked called the Yaartocpus that gives dubloons in exchange for tickets or food.
